We often get asked about whether a certain range of asphalt shingle colors will affect roofing performance. In today’s post, local roofing contractor A1 Siding & Roofing shares an in-depth look at how roofing colors affect roofing performance, and how you can achieve a good balance between both.

Light Vs. Dark Colored Roofing
Color affects the reflectivity of any surface, that is, the lighter the surface color, the more light that bounces off it. A dark-colored surface absorbs more solar heat: this is the reason why wearing white or light-colored shirts outdoors feels more comfortable than wearing dark-colored ones. A light-colored roof has the same properties, and would therefore have lower heat absorption rate.
The less heat the roof absorbs, the lower output is required from the house’s air conditioning system, which ultimately leads to energy savings during warm months. Conversely, homeowners located in predominantly cold climates may prefer to have a dark-colored roof because it helps reduce indoor heating requirements.
Cool Roofs
Dark-colored roofs are generally regarded as more aesthetically pleasing. This is why some homeowners are willing to have dark-colored residential roofing even if they live in areas that experience hot months for half a year. Some would compensate for the roof’s increased heat retention by doubling up on attic insulation and making sure that their air conditioning systems are well-maintained.
Thanks to modern roofing manufacturing technologies, it is possible to have the best of both worlds: a dark-colored asphalt shingle that won’t absorb as much heat as their standard counterparts. “Cool roofs” such as GAF Timberline® CS and CertainTeed Landmark Solaris® feature reflective coatings and/or granules that help improve surface reflectivity. These ENERGY STAR®-certified roofing systems are on par with the performance of standard light-colored asphalt shingles According to the Cool Roof Rating Council, cool roofs can help save up to 15% of an average home’s annual cooling costs.
