Fiber cement is a low-maintenance material, making it one of the most popular siding installation choices. This is all due to the special curing process used in the manufacturing of the material, which makes it extremely moisture resistant and durable.
In this post, A1 Siding and Roofing gives four tips on maintaining your fiber cement siding.
-
Cleaning – Your siding needs to be cleaned once a year. After all, it’s one of the main players in your home’s curb appeal. If your siding isn’t washed annually, mold and mildew can thrive, which create an eyesore as well as a health risk. Simply use a pressure washer or a high pressure hose to spray your siding from top to bottom and give it a thorough scrubbing with a soft bristled brush to remove any dust and debris caught on it.
-
Repainting – While fiber cement siding may be low maintenance, it will need to be repainted at some point. Depending on the type of fiber cement you purchase, it can take anywhere between five to 15 years before you’ll have to repaint it. Choose high-quality exterior grade acrylic paints to make it look good as new.
-
Inspect Caulking – Caulking is used by contractors to act as a moisture barrier for your siding, preventing it from being affected by condensation, leaks, warping and mold. Make sure your moisture barrier remains intact by annually inspecting the caulk. If you spot any cracks or gaps, simply add more caulk. If you’re unsure how to do this, you can always turn to a siding contractor like A1 Siding and Roofing.

Gutters and Downspouts – Moisture damage is one of the main problems that your siding will face. With that in mind, make sure rainwater is properly diverted away from it by maintaining your gutters and downspouts. Clean your gutters twice a year to prevent clogging and check your downspout as well to make sure water can freely flow through.
